Hi From Anchorage
We have had an exciting few days. After our three nights in Fairbanks we headed to Denali. We spent two nights right in the Park and it was just great. Seven years ago when Mom, James and I came to Alaska and did the Tundra Wilderness Tour and I saw the camp ground sign, I decided then that Eddie and I would come and camp in Denali someday. Now we have!
We did the eight hour tour in the park. Non narriated but our driver kept up a running narriation all the way to our turn around point at Eielson Visitor Center at mile 66. 66 Miles doesn't sound like much but look at the pictures below and you'll see the road. It's the grey line in the middle of the rock face so travel is pretty slow. We saw caribou in the distance. Dall sheep waaaay off. A fox at the side of the road just lying in the grass. Snowshoe hare scampering across the road. Moose crossing the road. Arctic ground squirrell at the Visitor center and best of all a mother grizzly with two cubs. It was amazing!!
We arrived in Anchorage yesterday and today took a float plane trip in to the Alaska Range, over glaciers with a landing on Beluga Lake, a lake fed by the glaciers around it. The views were magnificant. We saw an active, but not eruptiung, volcano. It's the cone shaped mountain with the steam coming out of it. There were nine passengers plus the pilot and we all had a window seat. It was just awesome!
Tonight we went out for dinner and I had surf and turf. Steak and Alaska king crab! YUMMY!!
We are here tomorrow night and then head to the Kenai Pennunsula on Sunday. By Friday we will be in Homer where we are booked for three nights over the long weekend.
The dogs are having a great time. They love all the new smells and are eating almost all their food every night.
Until next time
LOL Eddie and Merrilyn
PS You'll have to excuse the typing, I can't get used to the keyboard on the little computer.
