Hello From Kenai

We had a very pretty drive along the Turnagain Arm when leaving Anchorage on the 26th, and then on to the Kenai Peninsula. We stayed at a beautiful little camp site in Cooper Landing. Cooper Creek North. One of 7 compleatly dry camp sites. Copper Creek South only had 22 tent sites. On our side there were really only two or three sites you could an RV into.

On the 27th we did the Kenai Canyon rafting trip. It was great. We drifted 10 miles down the fast moving river and had lunch served to us on the river shore. Then we went 7 miles through the canyon with class 2 & 3 rapids so still pretty tame but fun. In the canyon we saw a mother moose with her calf and then another moose. We saw lots of eagles along the way. lastly we entered Skilac Lake. From a distance you could really see the difference in the colour of the Kenai River and the glacier lake. There was almost a break water where the two surging waters met. We motored 5 miles up the very rough lake. That was where we really needed the rain gear.

Now I have a story about pictures taken during the trip. We did not take the Nikon as we didn't know just how wet things would get. I kept muttering "A kingdom for my Nikon" as until the lake having the Nikon would have been fine and then I could have put it in a wet bag. Anyways..... I only had pics taken on the little camera. Better than nothing I told myself. Last night I down loaded all the pics from the last couple of days on to the computer. This evening I go to transfer canyon pics to the trip file and guess what! The canyon pics have gone into never never land. Can't find them anywhere! Someone just didn't want us having canyon pics!

Today we drove less than 100KM to Kenai. We are at Beluga Lookout RV Park. Unfortunatly we don't have a site backing on the bluff but it is still a beautiful spot. The camp ground is on top of a bluff overlooking the mouth of the Kenai River at Cook Inlet. Beluga whales come in to the river at high tide to feed. We sat out in the sun for three hours waiting for them but didn't see any. We were treated to kingfishers feeding and very impressive eagles. One majestic mature one and two immature ones. One of the babies was flying with a kill and trying to eat it at the same time. The sky was a clear blue so it was a lovely way to spend an afternoon. And the pics of the eagles helps with the lose of the canyon pics.

We're still here tomorrow and don't know where we are on Thursday night then off to Homer for the long weekend.

Hi From Anchorage

We have had an exciting few days. After our three nights in Fairbanks we headed to Denali. We spent two nights right in the Park and it was just great. Seven years ago when Mom, James and I came to Alaska and did the Tundra Wilderness Tour and I saw the camp ground sign, I decided then that Eddie and I would come and camp in Denali someday. Now we have!

We did the eight hour tour in the park. Non narriated but our driver kept up a running narriation all the way to our turn around point at Eielson Visitor Center at mile 66. 66 Miles doesn't sound like much but look at the pictures below and you'll see the road. It's the grey line in the middle of the rock face so travel is pretty slow. We saw caribou in the distance. Dall sheep waaaay off. A fox at the side of the road just lying in the grass. Snowshoe hare scampering across the road. Moose crossing the road. Arctic ground squirrell at the Visitor center and best of all a mother grizzly with two cubs. It was amazing!!

We arrived in Anchorage yesterday and today took a float plane trip in to the Alaska Range, over glaciers with a landing on Beluga Lake, a lake fed by the glaciers around it. The views were magnificant. We saw an active, but not eruptiung, volcano. It's the cone shaped mountain with the steam coming out of it. There were nine passengers plus the pilot and we all had a window seat. It was just awesome!

Tonight we went out for dinner and I had surf and turf. Steak and Alaska king crab! YUMMY!!

We are here tomorrow night and then head to the Kenai Pennunsula on Sunday. By Friday we will be in Homer where we are booked for three nights over the long weekend.

The dogs are having a great time. They love all the new smells and are eating almost all their food every night.

Until next time

Hi Everyone

We are still in Fairbanks. We were able to change to a site with water and power.

Yesterday we went down town to the Midnight Sun Festival celebrating the Summer Solstice. Tomorrow is the longest day of the year. 22 Hours of sunlight and two of twighlight. Last evening as the evening before we visited with Doug and Carolyn from Bermuda. They have a truck and 5th wheel they park in Maryland and come to North America for six months of the year.

Today we went to Santa Claus House where it is Christmas all year long. I love Christmas and all the carols and decorations but I don`t think I could work with it all year long. There is a 42`Santa Claus here!

Tomorrow we are off to Denali where we will be dry camping for at least two hopefully three nughts. We won`t have wi-fi either so will be out of touch for a bit. Hopefully we will have one night with hook ups and wi-fi before going to the Kenai where we will likey be out of touch as well.

Got the oil changed in the truck today and our propane tanks filled. Ed will fill with water tomorrow morning so we will be all set.

After being gone for over a month now, everything is begining to blend together. We are having problems remembering where we have stayed where. And what day it is. We have changed four time zones so sometimes knowing what time it is is a problem too.

Having a blast!!!

PS More pictures once we have been in Denali. Hopefully of some nice big grizzlies!

Hello From Fairbanks

Yesterday's drive along the Top of the World Highway was an experiance to say the least! The scenary when we were out of the clouds was spectacular! The road on the Canadian side was gravel and in very good condition. Steep cliffs and few guard rails. The road on the US side was a true dirt road. Still in fairly good shape but very muddy. (Ed kept moaning about the truch and 5th wheel getting so dirty) Again steep drop offs but NO GUARD RAILS!! It was an awesome drive though. We didn't stay in Chicken because there was nothing there. We continued to Tok (pronounced Toke) and stopped at Tok RV Park. The first thing we did was bath the truck and 5th wheel. We must have taken a couple of pounds of mud off of them.

The camp ground had live entertainment. A guitar, fiddle and bango. They were pretty good.

We had brought a bottle of champaine with us to be cracked open to celebrate our first night in Alaska. This trip has been a long time coming!

Today we drove to Fairbanks. It was the first time we didn't get a spot at our first choise of camp ground. We are in a State Park with no hook ups sites available. We still have wi-fi though just no power so I wonder how long the battery on the computer will last. We hope to move to a site with power and water tomorrow.

We plan to spend three nights here and then we will be off to Denali. I have to phone for reservations.

That's it for now.

We had a really nice day in Dawson City today. We slept in until almost 8:30!! We drove the 96k loop around Upper Bonanza Creek through King Solomon Dome. Awesome scenery! Stopped and panned for gold on the way. I got eight small flakes. We then took the ferry across the Yukon at the north end of town and walked along the edge of the river to the Paddelwheel Graveyard to see the paddlewheels that were purpously run aground when the road to Dawson was finished and the paddlewheelers were not needed any more. Came back to the site, after buying gold pans, because it had started to pour. Had dinner and then went out to Claim 6 where you can pan for free. Didn't get anything but we had fun.

Tomorrow we are off to Chicken Alaska via The Top of the World Highway. We have heard it is in pretty good shape so hopefully we won't have any problems.
